Here is one artist that continues to impress me over and over again. Trip Wamsley plays Vigier's Arpege Basses, his favorite being a 5-string fretless in clear night blue.
Trip lives in Louisiana, and sems from a family of musically talented people. No wonder his brain waves show bass clefs when hooked up to a scanner.
Trip is primarily a solo artist, but frequenty gets calls for US tours with artists from Nashville to Florida. He has released several Solo albums, but don't expect a slapfest or bass ego mush. His compositions are ripe with feeling, his themes are full of beautiful harmonies. The melodies are primarily plaued on either a fretless Vigier or a 8-string Alembic. While the Vigier Bass lends a smooth swell to the melodies, the Alembic's high strings add an almost acoustic guitar Quality to his expressions.
In a power trio, such as Godin/Hurst/Wamsley during Namm 07, or more commonly Nix/Hurst/Wamsley Trip can support the band's moods like few bassists that I know of. He can be in teh pocket, and absolut groovemonster, or lead the way with incredibly tasty bass solos, usually stronlgy supporting the drum beat.
Trip sells his CD's on line at http://www.twbass.com/

Take a look - this guy deserves a bit of your time.
